The Adult Investigation units of the Probation Department serve the Court by providing pre-sentence information which consist of an analysis of the defendant’s social and criminal history, the crime, and the impact on victims and potential restitution (if applicable). Further, the officer applies the law governing disposition to make a sentencing recommendation. The recommendation may include directed intervention strategies to assist in the defendant’s redirection. These efforts further informed decision making and ensure a fair process for both defendants and the people.
Deputy Probation Officers are expected to be able to present and justify their reports and recommendations to the Court based on factual content and knowledge of sentencing law. Some officers staff specialty courts as court hearing officers. The units also conduct empirically based static risk assessments on defendants granted probation or sentenced to mandatory supervision to help determine appropriate supervision levels.
