James G. Bowles Youth Detention Center is the secure reception center for the youth of Kern County. It is operated by the Kern County Probation Department 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The youth detained at the facility are alleged to have committed a law violation and are detained for the protection of themselves and/or the community. All necessities are provided to youth detained including food, clothing, living quarters, mental health services, medical care, educational services and dental care.
Youth participate in programming throughout the day to include outdoor exercise (weather permitting), structured programming and free time. The individual and group programming is structured to promote positive behavior change and maintain a safe environment for their rehabilitation.
